Indian cricket victory celebration

India has won on Saturday the tenth edition of the cricket World Cup after winning the final to Sri Lanka, at a meeting held in Mumbai under tight security.

After the victory, thousands of people came to celebrate in different parts of the country. The population continued with great expectation the decisive match of the most popular sport in this Asian country.

Throughout the day, most shops were shut, while the large audience followed the match from the big screens in bar, restaurants and shopping malls.

In a country with 1,200 million inhabitants, where cricket is more than a simple sport, there is nothing bigger than rising the World Cup,” commented one of thousands of students who skipped class to celebrate in the surroundings of the Wankhede Stadium located in south Mumbai, where the final encounter took place.

The last time India won the important tournament was back in 1983. Sri Lanka, who lost four years ago against Australia in the final match of last world cup, had also won once champion title. That was back in 1996.

The meeting was held under strict security measures as this has been the first big sporting event in Mumbai since the bloody terrorist attacks of 2008.

The Indian team will win a prize for about $ 3.25 million, while the second place holder team of Sri Lanka will get 1.5 out of the 12.5 million handed the tournament.
